Prepare the conversation

Write down what is unclear: your objectives, supervision arrangements, tasks, review dates or evidence requirements.

Use a clear opening

Try: “I want to make sure I am meeting the placement objectives safely. Could we agree what I should focus on this week and when we can review it?”

Ask for specifics

Clarify who will supervise each activity, how competency will be assessed and what you should do when support is unavailable.

Escalate appropriately

If concerns continue, use the route provided by your employer, training provider or programme. Keep factual notes and avoid patient-identifiable information.

Practical advice

  • Bring the placement objectives to the discussion.
  • Ask for regular short review points.
  • Confirm instructions in writing when appropriate.
  • Keep factual records of agreed actions.
  • Use formal escalation routes for unresolved concerns.

Reflection

  • What is currently unclear?
  • What would a useful weekly review include?
  • Who can support you outside the placement if needed?
Remember: Follow your local SOPs, role boundaries and escalation processes. Ask an appropriate professional when you are unsure.
